NRN & Nepali Nationhood

Prakash Bom - 1/3/2010

Nepalis who opposed outright NRN's demand for dual-citizenship provision from the street corners of Kathmandu in their response to general public questionnaires of nepalnews.com and Kantipur surely have no knowledge of NRN's relation with the nation. This is the failure of government authorities to make general public aware of the existence of NRN around the world and their role in nation building process through remittance and investments.

How much NRN has contributed in last twenty years to inspire native Nepalis workforce to migrate abroad (in developed nations) and supported nation with remittance and investments seem insignificance to the government authorities and political leaders.

Basically, the general public of Nepal are ignorant of the possibility that how much national revenue NRN might bring into the nation as retirees, investors and through remittance in the future if dual-citizenship provision is approved in new constitution.

However, it is obvious that such response reflects the mindset of elites of government authority, political leaders and Constituent Assembly. Therefore, they have continued with the status qua of old regimes' constitutional provision against the demand of dual citizenship. The thinking of political leaders and law makers have not changed yet even in 21st century under the influence of elites of old establishment.

How incapable are the political leaders and their supporters regardless of which party they belong - Maoists or NC or UML makes no difference because they have neither vision nor guts to oppose the mindsets of the elites in the establishment. They are basically bunch of stingy individuals living in a poorest nation where favoritism and nepotism rules the law with the culture of impunity.

On the contrary, we NRN and other documented or undocumented Nepali workers have earned our livelihood with hard labor and dignity. Therefore, the nation like the United States' Congress has recently proposed a bill to make all undocumented immigrants to obtain legal document in several different ways - from temp-work permit to get amnesty. If this bill is passed the undocumented immigrants who have entered the United States before December 15, 2009 will get legal documents.

In that case, thousands of Nepalis will get legal document to work and live in the United States. Eventually, hundreds of thousand Nepalis will be NRN with their capacity to earn annually one hundred times more than any high ranking official of government of Nepal. Therefore, if the ruling elites, political leaders and their cadres do not see what NRN see then they are worst than the old regimes that repressed people for last two hundred years.

But if you can see what NRN see and you have got a brain for trying to understand the undergoing evolution of 21st century on a earth which needs help from entire humanity to save its natural habitats then think to consider NRN's demand for dual citizenship in Nepal's new constitution as a responsible politician, law-maker and government authority.

As a NRN I challenge that Nepal will benefit less if NRN are denied in Nepal's new constitution for dual citizenship provision in the long run. Nepali origin NRNs will lose apatite to its stingy nationhood no matter how beloved it is. NRNs will be compelled to let go their bonding.

This is my plea to all Nepali Diasporas in the United States whether documented or undocumented to sign the following petition that has been purposed by NRN New York. This is my personal appeal and if we act it can yield well to all of us in near future. The current political tradition of Nepal seems need hard struggle more often a fight to get our legitimate right.
